Malta, officially the Republic of Malta, is an island country in the Mediterranean Sea, strategically located midway between Gibraltar and Suez and between Italy and Tunisia. It consists of the islands of Malta, Gozo and Comino. Malta gained importance as an important port on the route to the Suez Canal where ships could refuel and later as a military base for Great Britain. Malta is an original British colony until 1964. Traces of Great Britain have remained here, such as traditional red telephone booths, mailboxes and also the fact that cars drive on the left. Today, Malta lives primarily from tourism.
Malta has more than 300 sunny days a year and you can visit at any time of the year. Summer is ideal for a holiday by the sea, when the sea is beautifully warm. Spring and autumn are ideal times for sightseeing and swimming in pleasant, non-tropical temperatures. Winter is a great time for tourists who want cheaper flights.
Malta is very rich in historical monuments. Three of them are under UNESCO: the entire capital city of Valletta, megalithic structures in Malta and Gozo. Most tourists and visitors to Malta will definitely visit the capital city of Valletta first, which is particularly proud of its fortifications and walls, the Cathedral of St. John's Co-Cathedral, Grand Master's Palace and Upper Barrakka Gardens. Valletta is also the center of all the cultural happenings.
On the contrary, medieval Mdina offers an escape into the fairytale world of medieval castles and battles. This ancient city is unique for its history, which you can feel as soon as you enter the city - the magnificent Main Gate
Malta is a popular tourist destination especially for its beautiful beaches and the beauty of the underwater world. It is surrounded by crystal blue water, clean and well-maintained beaches. Swimming and diving is very pleasant, as there are almost no waves here. Here are some of the most popular beaches to visit in Malta: Golden Bay, Ghajn Tuffieha, Mellieha Bay (Malta's longest beach). The beaches of Paradise Bay, the area called Peter's Pool and the Blue Lagoon are especially ideal for diving.
Today, a bird sanctuary has been established on the island of Comin for the hundreds of seabirds that nest on the island. Of the natural phenomena of this island, the Blue Lagoon is probably the most visited, from which you can see the small island of Cominotto with its fantastic surroundings.
Malta is also called the "island of miracles". The island is associated with the legend that Odysseus was shipwrecked here and the nymph Calypso lured him here and imprisoned him for seven long years. The Oscar-winning film Gladiator, Midnight Express, Troy and Master Leonardo's Code were also filmed here.
